The options are from the Government Statistical Service guidance on measuring disability (2019; and used by the 2021 Census) which asks Do you have any physical or mental health conditions or illnesses lasting or expected to last 12 months or more?

Religion

This section shows religions as collected by the 2021 Census in England which asks: What is your religion?. Christian includes Church of England, Catholic, Protestant and all other Christian denominations. Other includes any other religions not otherwise listed.

Socio-economic background

This section uses categories from the Social Mobility Commission toolkit which suggests employers ask the key question "What was the occupation of your main household earner when you were about aged 14?". The options include: lower socio-economic background (e.g. technical and craft occupations; routine, semi-routine manual and service occupations; long-term unemployed); intermediate background (e.g. clerical and intermediate occupations; small business owners); professional background (e.g. modern professional & traditional occupations; senior or junior managers or administrators).

Reference area values come from 2021 Census data for National Statistics Socio-economic Classification which includes usual residents aged 16 years and over. Previously we used data split by AB/C1/C2/D/E approximated social grade classifications. In the 2021 Census data we have grouped National Statistics Socio-economic Classification categories as follows:

  • Lower - L10 and L11 Lower supervisory and technical occupations, L12 Semi-routine occupations L13 Routine occupations, L14.1 and L14.2 Never worked and long-term unemployed, L15 Full-time students
  • Intermediate - L7 Intermediate occupations, L8 and L9 Small employers and own account workers
  • Professional - L1, L2 and L3 Higher managerial, administrative and professional occupations, L4, L5 and L6 Lower managerial, administrative and professional occupations

Note that these classifications are for individuals as of the 2021 Census rather than the classification of their parents when they were 14 as this is the best proxy we have available for this question.
