This section uses categories from the Social Mobility Commission toolkit which suggests employers ask the key question "What was the occupation of your main household earner when you were about aged 14?". The options include: lower socio-economic background (e.g. technical and craft occupations; routine, semi-routine manual and service occupations; long-term unemployed); intermediate background (e.g. clerical and intermediate occupations; small business owners); professional background (e.g. modern professional & traditional occupations; senior or junior managers or administrators).

Reference area values come from 2011 Census data for approximated social grade. We have grouped C2 and DE as Lower, C1 as Intermediate, and AB as Professional.
